Do you even know which version of Windows you have? Microsoft certainly makes it easier to find the Windows version you have than to find the version on Windows 10.
Back then, it was important to include explanations of all of the different feature update and build version numbers and names to know which version went with the features you want.
Now, you can get your Windows version by using a keyboard shortcut, accessing system properties via Settings, by keyword in Search, and by using Command Prompt or PowerShell.
This guide will walk you through all four ways to do it on Windows 11 and you can also use these steps on Windows 10 too.
#1: Use a keyboard shortcut to get your version of Windows
The fastest way to access which version of Windows you have is by using a keyboard shortcut. Here’s what to do.
1. Press the Windows key + Pause keyboard shortcut to be taken directly to the About section of your PC. Your version information is displayed under Windows specifications.
Using this keyboard shortcut is the fastest way to see what version of Windows you have on your machine.
#2: System Properties
Another way to check what version of Windows you have is by accessing the About section we just opened, but adds a couple of extra steps. Here’s what to do.
1. Click Start (or open Settings directly by using the Windows key + i keyboard shortcut).
2. Go to Settings > System > About.
3. You will find Windows version information located under Windows specifications.
#3: Keyword or command in Search or Start
Another, more well known way of checking your Windows version is by using winver. Here’s what you need to do.
1. Type (or copy and paste) winver in the Search or after you click the Start button and press Enter.
2. Your Windows version information is displayed in a popup window. Click OK to close the window.
If you want to view System Information to see even more details, you can do so by replacing winver with msinfo or msinfo32 instead.
You can also use these commands by themselves as commands in PowerShell or Command Prompt too.
#4: Using PowerShell or Command Prompt
The last way to find out what version of Windows your machine runs is by using PowerShell or Command Prompt. Here’s what you need to do.
1a. Type (or copy and paste) the following into either interface:
systeminfo | findstr /B /C:"OS Name" /B /C:"OS Version" and press Enter.
1b. If you want to see licensing information too, type (or copy and paste) slmgr /dlv and press Enter.
2. Your Windows version or licensing information will be displayed as indicated. Click OK to close the window when finished.
