The Boor Order, also known as the Boot Sequence, is an ordered list of devices that computers look for before booting up their files. By default, the boot order is set to start your computer straight from your Windows operating system.
However, in some cases, you might want to shift things up and change your boot order. This article will cover that and show you how to change your Windows boot order manually.
How to change the Boot order on Windows
Whether you want to boot up your PC from a different operating system on your hard drive or boot things from your USB stick or DVD, you’ll need to change the boot order of your Windows first.
By default, Microsoft places the Windows operating system as the top priority of your PC. To tweak the order, you’ll have to access the recovery settings of your PC. Here’s how:
- Press the Windows key + I together to launch the settings app. Alternatively, head to the Start menu search bar, type in ‘settings,’ and select the best match.
- From there, click on Update & Security > Recovery, and click on Restart now.
Your system will be rebooted as soon as you do this. From there, click on Troubleshoot > Advanced Options.
Click on the UEFI Firmware Settings, and your PC will reboot and take you to the Startup menu. From there, press F9 to enter the Boot Device Options; from here you can easily change the boot order of your system.
On the next screen, you’ll see a host of options to boot your PC from. Click on F10 from there. Now head to the System Configurations tab, scroll down to Boot Options, and hit Enter.
From the System Configurations screen, you can switch the boot order by simply clicking on F5/F6. When you’re done, click on F10 to Save and Exit from the menu.
You’ll then get a prompt about whether you want to exit by saving your settings; select Yes and hit Enter. And that’s it, folks. Your PC will now boot as per the new booting order.
On Windows 11
The underlying process to change the boot order will effectively stay the same; only the specifics of the steps will be different. On your Windows 11, press the Windows key + I together to open the Settings menu. Then, click on System > Recovery and select Restart now from the Recovery options section.
As soon as you do this, your PC will get taken to the boot menu of your PC. From there, click on Troubleshoot and select Advanced options > UEFI Firmware Settings. Finally, click on Restart, and your Windows will boot into the UEFI settings.
Once you’re in the UEFI settings, you can select the device you’d like to boot your system from. Then, from the main menu of your UEFI settings, click on Boot Maintenance Manager.
Then select Boot options and pick Change Boot Order. From here, you can change the boot order with ease. When you’ve chosen the final boot order, move to Commit Changes and Exit and hit Enter.
Go back to the main menu by hitting Esc, and finally click on Continue, and your PC will start booting up, as per your new boot order settings.
Changing the boot order on your Windows 10 or Windows 11
You can easily change your boot order on Windows by tweaking the settings from the UEFI settings of your PC.
